The Apartment

Retro movies are some of our favorites because film-makers could take the time to really develop a story line and a set of characters. (And audiences were willing to give the time to focus on the questions that a movie would present – and some of them were tough questions to think about!). The Apartment is one such film. We weren’t sure what to expect when we hit play. First thought: Oh, Billy Wilder directed this 1960’s gem, so it’s probably a comedy along the lines of Some Like It Hot. Second thought: the talented Jack Lemmon is in the starring role so yep, definitely a comedy. But the journey we were taken on was not a comedy pure and simple – it was something much more personal and dynamic. Let us share with you why we loved The Apartment.

Things in life may not be easy, but always look for the humor

Shirley MacLaine

Shirley MacLaine as Fran

Shirley MacLaine’s character, Fran Kubelik, is a character that will find a way into your heart. It’s a credit to the writing and MacLaine’s performance – taking a flawed woman and showing her weakness can be channeled into a strength. Just when you think you have her pegged, she’ll surprise you. And one of Fran’s best qualities is her ability to make a joke despite the misery and not let the humor blind her from reality, but give her a chance to find a solution.

Some people are proactive but some are reactive

Fred MacMurray’s role as Jeff D. Sheldrake is played to perfection. We always wondered just how accurate Mad Men’s portrayal of office romance is and Wilder answered that for us brilliantly. When it comes to honesty in a relationship, you can’t build a strong foundation unless all interested parties actively want to be together. Communication is a key theme throughout the film and you’ll enjoy seeing how each archetype experiences/handles interactions.

Jack Lemmon

Jack Lemmon as C.C. Baxter

Don’t get taken advantage of

Jack Lemmon’s ambitious C.C. Baxter proves that sometimes what others ask you to do to get to the top isn’t worth it. Create success on your own terms; be nice and thoughtful but set clear boundaries so you preserve your personal life as your career blossoms. Remember if your lifestyle isn’t sustainable your future job happiness will fizzle out too.

It’s possible to change habits you don’t like, but it takes personal growth

One of our favorite things about this film is how Fran and C.C. take very separate, but similar journeys. As they each find their voice, they end up developing a deep appreciation for each other. But don’t think of this adventure in your typical rom-com style. Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond didn’t set the stage in such an obvious way, they relied on the actors’ inflections, the characters’ traits, and the audience’s interpretation to flesh out the story. Rarely in today’s Hollywood do directors and actors grant so much respect and responsibility to their viewers. So we encourage you to experience this kind of movie watching enjoyment with The Apartment.

I just saw this movie for the first time last winter. I loved it, it was not your typical Hollywood romance movie, and I loved that about it. It was surprising that it touched on a serious subject too and that it was done in a way that showed human frailty and vulnerability honestly but also showed the characters growth.
