How to get eyebrows like a vintage diva
Nov 29, 2013 | by Becky Oeltjenbruns
Vivien Leigh can rock a perfect eye brow like nobody’s business. Check her out – so much sass, seduction, and pizzazz in that solitary raised brow. A perfect brow will frame your face and set the stage for a polished look. If you’re worried about shaping brows on your own, cast your fear aside and follow our tips and tricks!
A Beginner’s Guide to Shaping your Brows | Illustrated with Retro Icons
Before we begin, remember to pace yourself to avoid over-plucking. Pluck a little and take a good look in the mirror before you proceed. It can be easy to get so focused on plucking that you go too far which can ruin the full, vintage shape you want to achieve.
Determine where your eyebrow should start by taking the sides of your tweezers (or a thin makeup brush handle) and holding it vertically against the side of your nose. We recommend marking where that starting point is with eyeliner or a brow pencil. With that as a guide, carefully pluck any hairs that go past that edge, toward your nose.
Next up is to figure out where your eyebrow should end.
Reach for your trusty tweezers or brush handle and lay it against your cheek. You will want the handle to “draw a line” between the bottom of your nose and the outside corner of your eye. Wherever that intersects your eyebrow is where your brow should end. Again, mark the spot with an eyeliner or your brow pencil. Carefully pluck any hairs that go past that line.
Figure out how thick your brows should be, keeping in mind that a thicker brow will lend a more vintage look.
(It also typically frames your face more effectively).
Looking in the mirror, figure out the fullest part of your eyebrow. Take a brow pencil and draw a line along that bottom edge. You want to position it just right: the line should be above any stray hairs while following the natural shape of your top line. Pluck any hairs below this edge. Keep in mind to not “over-pluck.” When in doubt, leave the hair. And remember, you don’t want to pluck any hairs from the top of your brow!
The finishing touch also involves looking directly into the mirror: we’re going to place the arch for your brow.
Ideally you want the peak of your arch above the outside rim of your pupil, sitting on top of your brow bone. Mark this point with your brow pencil and remove any stray hairs along the bottom. Once you’ve finished the arch you want to shape the tail of your brow. While you want the tail to be thinner, don’t over-do it. As we have learned, tails thin naturally as we age. If you over-do it now you’ll paint yourself into a corner in the future. So pluck carefully!
